Microchipping

Have you ever thought about what you would do in the event that your pet becomes lost or missing? Don’t wait until it happens to microchip your dog or cat! At Animal Medical Center, our veterinarians believe and encourage that every pet should have a microchip implantation.

A microchip implantation is the best and most effective way to ensure that your pet returns home safe and sound. A microchip is a small, rice-size chip that goes between your pet’s shoulder blades and under their skin. A microchip can be implanted during one of their regular wellness exams, and best of all, there is no anesthesia necessary!

How a Microchip Works

A microchip is encoded with information that is unique to you and your pet. In the event that your pet has become lost or missing, most animal hospitals, shelters, and animal control offices are equipped with the tools necessary to read your pet’s microchip. Once your pet’s microchip has been scanned, the animal hospital, shelter, or animal control who has found your pet will check the information with the AVMA contact you as soon as possible.

If you have more questions or would like more information on microchipping, please visit the AVMA website. If you have found a lost pet and are wondering if they have a microchip, please contact us or your local animal hospital, shelter, or animal control to scan the pet’s microchip. You can also use the Pet Microchip Lookup website to find information based on the pet’s microchip number.
